Carly barged into Craig's hotel suite and told Craig that someone had to save her life that night, and he was it. She told him about Emily putting a story about her and Jack in the Intruder, and she wanted it stopped. Craig told her that they couldn't have that, and she was surprised to see him agree so quickly. He said that if they put a story about her and Jack in the paper, their readers would be bored. She told him to stop joking. She needed help -- and fast. She said that if Julia read that story, she would get some high-priced divorce lawyer, and Jack would be tied to her forever.

Craig beat around the bush, and Carly told him to hurry up and decide. She added that Jack was waiting for her downstairs in the bar, and he was not happy that she went to Craig for help. Craig asked why. She told him that Jack didn't like him. Finally, Craig gave her the word. He would go and talk to Emily, but he had one question. Carly told him not to ask. He asked anyway, "What is in it for me?"

Carly told Craig that he owed her big time. She reminded him about the times she had bailed him out and all the times she had sat and listened to him whine about Hal picking on him. He smiled at her and said that he could eat her up like an ice cream sundae. She smiled at him and told him if he tried to, he might get some crushed nuts. He told her to go and be with Jack, and he would go and talk to Emily. Carly went downstairs to the bar to meet Jack.

Craig went to Emily's office. She told him that she had been expecting him, and he might as well save his breath. She was not going to cut the story about Carly and Jack. He told her that he had a bigger story for her. She was skeptical but asked what it could be. He told her that Lucinda was about to lose her fortune. He said that a hostile takeover was in the works for WorldWide.

Emily was not sure about the story, but she accepted his proposal and called the pressroom to stop the story. Craig left, and after he was gone, she kept looking at the mock-up of the Jack and Carly story. She said that she just couldn't pass up the opportunity, and she called the pressroom and told them to go ahead and run the story.

When Carly got to the bar at the Lakeview, Jack was waiting for her, but he was not happy. She asked him how mad he was at her. He tried to explain why he did not like Craig. He told her that he had interrupted Hal and Barbara's marriage only to get her money. She tried to defend Craig. They decided it was time to leave.

As Carly and Jack were leaving, Craig walked in and told them that Emily had agreed to not run the story about them. Carly thanked him, and she told Jack that they had to leave. Craig questioned them about leaving at the same time. Jack told Craig to stay out of his life. Craig left, and Carly said that maybe Craig was right. She suggested that Jack leave, and she would wait a few minutes and then leave after him. Jack said that he would call her the next day and walked out of the hotel.

At Lucinda's house, Gabriel delivered flowers. Ruby answered the door and told him, in a loud voice, that Ms. Walsh was in the library, but she could sign for the flowers. Gabriel gave her a small bag of white powder. She asked what it was for. Lucinda stepped out of the library and asked if she was needed. Ruby said that she was signing for her flower delivery. Lucinda waved her on and went back to the library.

Gabriel told Ruby to give Lucinda a little of the white powder several times a day. He told her that she should see a difference in Lucinda's actions immediately. However, if she didn't, they would have to up the dosage. Ruby questioned Gabriel about drugging someone. She added that they'd never had to do that before. Gabriel explained that they had a new partner -- Craig Montgomery.

Gabriel left, and Ruby took the flowers in to Lucinda. Lucinda questioned why Ruby had been at the door so long with the delivery guy. Ruby said that Lucinda seemed to have a secret admirer; there was no card, and Ruby and the delivery person had been trying to find one. Lucinda asked who the flower shop was. Ruby said that she hadn't noticed. She asked Lucinda if she would like some tea. At first, Lucinda said no then she said, "Sure, darling, if you are having some."

Ruby fixed the tea for Lucinda with the powder in it. Lucinda took a sip, set the tea down, and started to read a book. Ruby said that the tea was going to get cold if Lucinda didn't drink it. Lucinda said that she liked it better that way. Ruby said that she was going to bed. She went just outside the door and watched Lucinda take another sip of her tea.

Later, Ruby returned, and Lucinda was staring into space. Ruby said, "Ms Walsh? Are you coming to bed?" Lucinda snapped out of her trance and asked why Ruby was so interested in her bedtime. Lucinda added that Ruby had just been there five minutes before. Ruby informed her that it had been a half an hour before. Lucinda looked at her watch and said that her book had to be better than she'd thought. She got up and left the room. Ruby went to Lucinda's cup, and it was empty.

When Craig got back to his suite, Gabriel was there. Craig questioned why Gabriel was in his hotel suite. Gabriel said that he was there to report about Lucinda. Craig warned him that if he had planted a bug in the room, Craig would find it. He warned Gabriel not to double-cross him, or he would pay.

As Gabriel left, he asked why Craig was always so grouchy. He says that Craig was about to be the richest man in Oakdale. Craig said that there were a lot of loose ends that needed to be tied up. Gabriel left.

Lily was busy around the house, gathering up some things for her and Holden to have a romantic dinner. Someone was watching her from the front door. She turned to look because she felt someone watching her. She went to the front door and looked out the side windows. Holden walked in and told her that the kids were asleep, and they could have their romantic dinner. She told him that she'd thought she'd heard someone outside.

Holden went to get a flashlight, and Lily asked if he was going outside. She told him that it was no big deal, and it had probably been the wind. He said that he would just go look in case it was something else. She stopped him and said that it might be Simon. She confessed to going and seeing Simon when she had told him she was doing errands. Holden got upset with her for not telling him what she had been doing.

Lily explained to Holden about finding out about Simon and what he had done to some other rich women. She tried to explain to him that she had been embarrassed and had just wanted to confront Simon about what his real intentions were toward her. Holden was very upset with Lily for seeing Simon. She told him that it was all over, and she had almost lost him. However, they were together, and they would stay that way. She added that nothing was going to interrupt their lives anymore.

Holden gave her a kiss and blew out the candles. He took Lily's hand and led her to the doorway to go upstairs. They paused and kissed again. Someone was watching them from outside the house.

At the courthouse, Isaac, Ben, Curtis, and Lien prepared for their custody hearing. Lien took Ben aside to calm him down and told him he needed to compose himself for Curtis' sake. Ben said he was feeling out of control, but before he could go on, Lien kissed him.

Craig laughed at the front page of the Intruder, splashed with news of Carly and Jack's affair, as Emily walked in. He asked her why she had gone ahead with the story.

Carly ran to Jack's to show him the paper, and they argued over Craig's failed promise to stop it. Carly defended Craig and said it was all Emily's doing. Jack didn't buy it and wondered why Craig had deceived her.

After the kiss with Lien, Ben was much calmer, and they headed back into the courtroom. Curtis told Ben he was scared and said his biological father was his not his true father, but Ben was, and he wasn't ready to see Leo Thompson. Just then, Leo walked in.

As Barbara was trying to arrange the seating plan for her wedding, Lisa entered and tried to help. She ripped up Craig's name and said he was the reason for all the difficulty in her life. Barbara defended him, and then Lisa showed her the Intruder and said Craig had trashed their good friend Julia.

Craig argued with Emily about going against his orders, but Emily wondered what his motive was for stopping the story, since he knew Jack wanted him behind bars -- she said that Carly had to be the reason. Craig said they were friends, but Emily knew he didn't do favors for anyone, so maybe he had feelings for her. Craig brushed the notion aside and told her that she wouldn't get any information about WorldWide. Emily said no one could take down Lucinda, but Craig said he could. Emily was upset to learn she wouldn't get the scoop she had been promised, but Craig told her she needed to follow his rules.

Carly defended Craig to Jack, but Jack told her he was a fraud. Carly contended he had nothing to gain by running the story, but Jack felt he had run it so that Jack's divorce wouldn't go through, and Craig would be able to have Carly all to himself.

Leo introduced himself to Curtis, who was reluctant to shake his hand. Leo thanked Ben for caring for Curtis and asked to talk to Curtis alone. Lien asked Ben why he had let Curtis go with Leo, and Ben said Curtis needed to meet Leo in case the trial didn't go their way -- Curtis needed to know his father. As the hearing got underway, Lien said not to worry because everything would be fine.

Barbara told Lisa that Craig had not been involved with the story and that had been all Emily. Lisa disagreed and thought that Craig was after Carly, just as Craig walked in. As she was leaving, Lisa told Craig he was trash. Craig said he'd had nothing to do with the story running, and he had tried to stop it.

Carly laughed at the idea that Craig might be interested in her. Jack was convinced, saying a man didn't take in a woman and her child if he wasn't interested. Jack asked Carly if Craig had ever hinted, even in jest, about the two of them being together, and reluctantly, Carly told him about the time Craig had jokingly asked her to run away with him. Jack felt that Craig was trying to stay close to her. Carly insisted she didn't care; they needed to be thinking about Julia and what she was going to do about the story. At that moment, Hal called and told Jack to hightail it down to the station because his job was on the line.

Ben took the stand and told the court that Curtis had improved greatly since he had arrived to live with him nine months before -- he was no longer getting into trouble, and his diabetes was in check, which allowed him to participate in school. Leo's attorney tried to take Ben down by countering that Ben had no experience raising children, and his job as a doctor was very time-consuming. Lien then called Curtis to the stand but stopped as she had a dizzy episode.

Craig and Barbara discussed whether or not Julia would be up to attending the wedding, and Barbara added maybe it would be best to leave Carly off the guest list. Carly showed up at the penthouse and asked to speak with Craig.

Lien shook off her episode, and Curtis took the stand, saying he'd had a lot of foster parents, but no one had treated him as well as Ben. Ben had changed him and made him responsible and trustworthy. Leo's attorney said the point of the case was not how good Ben was but if his real father was a bad father. Curtis said he didn't know Leo but couldn't prove he was a bad father.

At the station, Jack explained to Hal what had happened with him and Carly, but Hal said the commissioner was not thrilled about the situation because adultery was illegal, and there would be an internal affairs investigation.

Barbara and Carly went at it about the story, but Carly said Barbara was one to talk, considering her affair with Craig. Barbara taunted her and said Carly could not go to the wedding, but Carly said she would be there with bells on. Barbara left, and Carly asked Craig if he had "sandbagged" her on purpose.

Back in court, Leo's attorney tried to wear Curtis down and twist his words, telling him that Leo could be a good father and deserved a second chance like the one Ben had given Curtis. He asked how Curtis could turn on his flesh and blood. Hearing about all he could take, Ben stood up and told the lawyer to leave Curtis alone.

Hal told Jack that the commissioner wouldn't budge on his investigation, and Jack needed to stay away from Carly. Jack left to see Julia.

Craig said he had no reason to expose Carly and Jack, but Carly asked him if he had done it because he had a "thing" for her.

In Katie and Simon's hotel room, Katie was excited when she talked about Craig and Barbara's wedding. Simon wasn't interested in going to the wedding. Katie left the room to take a bath as Ruby showed up at the door. Ruby told Simon that Lucinda had told her that he was just using her. Simon told her that it was just a game with him, and she had learned how the people that she had conned had felt.

Katie entered the room and was angry when she saw Ruby. Katie asked what Ruby wanted. She told Ruby to leave. The girls argued, and to make Katie madder, Ruby began kissing Simon. Katie grabbed the fire extinguisher off the wall and sprayed Ruby. Ruby screamed and walked off.

Simon laughed and told Katie that he'd loved every minute of seeing her and Ruby fighting over him. Katie told Simon that she wanted him to tell her all about the diamond that had led him to Springfield. She was surprised to hear the details of Simon's sister sinking in the water with the diamond. Katie promised to get the diamond back for Simon. After Simon left the room, Katie called Henry and asked him to meet with her at the Lakeview Lounge.

In the Lakeview Lounge, Katie told Henry about the diamond and her plans to find it. He reminded her that it took money to travel to the island and to buy all the necessary equipment to do what she wanted to do. Katie smiled and told him that she hadn't told anyone, but she was loaded.

In the courtroom, Leo's lawyer asked Curtis if his biological father should get a second chance at being his father. The judge asked Lien if she was through with her questioning of Curtis. She said she had a few more questions. She asked Curtis what it had been like when he had first started living with Ben. Curtis talked about his nightmares and how great Ben had been by making feel at home and not afraid anymore.

Curtis looked at Leo and said that at first he had thought he would hate him, but he didn't, and maybe if things were different, he could have loved him. With tears in his eyes, he begged Leo not to take Ben away from him. Outside the courtroom, Ben asked Lien if they had a chance. Leo asked Lien if he could talk to her. When Lien returned, she told Ben and Curtis that it was all over. They wanted to know what that meant. She told them that Leo had relinquished his rights as a parent.

Back in the courtroom, Leo's lawyer told the judge that his client no longer wished to pursue custody of his son. The judge said that there was nothing left to do but for Lien to file the adoption papers for Ben. Curtis thanked Leo. Ben shook Leo's hand and told him that he would be a good father to Curtis. Tom congratulated Lien for the good job she had done.

In Craig's hotel suite, Carly asked Craig if he'd had anything to do with keeping the story about her and Jack in the paper. Craig asked her how he would profit by having them exposed on the front page of the Intruder. She suggested it was because he was interested in her, and she smiled coyly. Craig told her he had always wanted her.

Carly's jaw dropped as she stared at him. Craig kept talking about her until she realized that he was joking. She told him it wasn't funny and that Jack was in hot water because of the photo. Carly defended Jack when Craig told her that Jack had changed her from the Carly he had known. She said he was wrong and that a simple life with Jack was all she wanted. He told her that he thought that Jack was turning her into another Julia.

After Carly left, Bryant showed up. He apologized about the way he had acted and said he wouldn't use the pictures of Craig and Ruby. He said he realized it had been a dirty trick, and he wanted them to get along with each other the way they had before. Craig asked what Bryant was going to do with the pictures. Bryant said that he had burned the pictures along with the negatives. Bryant left and called Jennifer. He told her that it was done, and he was sure that Craig had fallen for his story. Inside the suite, Craig said to himself that Bryant wasn't a very good liar.

Simon told Craig that he wanted Craig's money so he could leave town. Craig said Simon would get the money after Craig got the photos of himself and Ruby. Simon said that he was out of that business. They continued to argue, and then Craig said he had decided to handle getting the pictures himself. He said that he had a plan to take the guest of honor to the party at Lucinda's, as he looked at the piece of paper with Lily's name on it.

At the psychiatric ward at the hospital, Julia asked Jack what he wanted when he showed up to talk to her. She showed him the front page of the Intruder. Jack wanted to know what she wanted of him; he couldn't do anything about the pictures in the paper. Julia told Jack that she realized that she had to be realistic about him loving Carly and not her.

Julia told Jack that she didn't know where she was going to live when she left the hospital and he and Carly lived happily ever after. He suggested that she stay in the house in Milltown. She told him she wanted to move somewhere else to get a new start on life. Then, she told him she wanted to build a home on the land he had bought for Carly. Jack wanted to know why she would want the property that he had bought for Carly. They argued about it.

Julia told Jack that her mother's lawyers had faxed her some papers. She gave the papers to Jack for him to sign over "Carly's prize" to her. She told him to sign the papers, and it would be all over; he wouldn't have to see her again. Jack signed the papers. He wanted to make sure that she would sign the divorce papers. She said she would after Barbara and Craig's wedding. After Jack left, Julia talked to someone on the phone. She told the person on the phone that she had recently acquired a piece of property and she had plans to build something special on it.

In Jack and Julia's house, Jack stormed in and found Carly waiting for him. He told her the day couldn't be any worse. He said that the commissioner had demoted him to desk duty. He told Carly he'd had to give Julia the land he had bought for Carly. Carly couldn't believe that Jack had given their home site to Julia. He said he had signed the documents giving Julia the land. Carly wondered if they would ever get married or if Julia would always be interfering in their lives. Jack promised Carly that they would be married, and he planned to get the property back for her.

Damian prepared for a special visit and grabbed a wrapped present while hiding a huge knife in a sheath attached to the back of his belt. Damian stopped by to see Luke. When Luke answered the door, Damian asked if Luke remembered that Damian was his dad.

Katie convinced Henry that she had a stockpile of money that would allow them to put together the trip to the island to find Simon's diamond. He forced her to reveal she had about $30,000 tied up in CDs. The two agreed to split the proceeds from their treasure hunt and began planning their trip.

Lucinda was impressed with all Rose had done to get ready for the night's party. Offering her a special dress to wear, she assured Rose that she would do all she could to help Rose be successful in Oakdale. Craig convinced Lily to give him an invitation to her party at Lucinda's. There, he checked on Ruby, who gave Lucinda another dose of the African root drug, this time in her champagne.

While babysitting for Lily and Holden, Abigail and Adam admitted their lies to each other and admitted they didn't have dates. The two promised not to lie to each other again. Rose made a humorous but sincere toast to Lily and Holden. Rose leaked to Molly and Jake that Matthew had received a telegram before he had suddenly disappeared and added that he always used a car service. The two decided to follow up on the lead and left the party.

Friday, May 11, 2001

Lucinda threatened Craig with the pictures that Bryant claimed to have burned. Ruby manipulated Lucinda into downing her drugged glass of champagne. Jen was thrown by Ruby working as Lucinda's maid, and when she questioned her about it, Ruby suspiciously replied that she would be around for as long as it took. Lucinda started to feel the effect of the hallucinogens.

Craig feigned concern and "worried" that Lucinda might be having another stroke. Craig instructed Ruby to get rid of the evidence as Rose and John tended to Lucinda. Lucinda insisted that it was not necessary that she go to the hospital -- all she needed was rest.

Meanwhile, Molly and Jake continued to search the car for evidence. Molly found a strand of wiry steel in the back seat. She wrapped it up and saved it. The owner of the car showed up, and after a brief misunderstanding of Jake and Molly's intentions, she agreed to tell them all that she remembered about the night Matthew had disappeared. She told them that Matthew had left with an Englishman and had asked to be taken to a boathouse.

Jake and Molly suspected that the key to finding Matthew was finding out who had sent him the telegram. Jake feared that Matthew might truly be in trouble when they discovered that Western Union had no record of Matthew's telegram.

Carly was arrested on bogus soliciting charges. The arresting officer took her to a stakeout van, where Jack was waiting with champagne and candles. He insisted that he was no longer taking orders from Julia.

Damian gave Luke a birthday present, the Grimaldi family crest. Damian and Luke were talking about Malta when a surprised Holden and Lily returned home from the party. Damian explained to Lily and Holden that he had never been a monk; it had just been a cover so he could hide from the world. Damian said he was going back to Malta for good and was in Oakdale to say goodbye to his family. Holden was suspicious of Damian's true motives.
