Daytime couples pretty much don't get any better than General Hospital's Carly and Sonny, or CarSon as fans have affectionately dubbed the fictional pair. Laura Wright and Maurice Benard's version of the couple has been hot and heavy for a whopping 15 years (punctuated by typical soap opera breakups and makeups, of course), which means the two actors have grown pretty close. In celebration of their 15-year anniversary as romantic costars, the Emmy-winning actors appeared on the Wednesday, March 4, episode of Hallmark Channel's Home & Family.
Right off the bat, co-host Cameron Mathison (ex-Ryan Lavery, All My Children) asked the question we all want to know: have Wright and Benard ever had a real-life argument during those 15 years of working together? The answer may surprise you!
"No, we've never had an argument," Benard confided before joking, "I mean, I'm sure she's wanted to kill me a lot!"
Added Wright after a laugh, "There's so much respect and honesty. If he has a moment or I have a moment, we'll let each other have what they need... which is very important. Like if I want to do something and he doesn't feel it works, he'll tell me. There's so much honesty."
There is also -- as fans know -- a lot of drama on GH. For instance, Sonny was once in a wheelchair during one of CarSon's weddings, while Wright basically hobbled down the aisle during Sonny and Carly's most recent wedding ceremony due to having broken her ankle the night before shooting! The pair joked about that before moving on to a more serious topic: Benard's bipolar disorder and the opportunity he had to bring awareness to the mental health issue via Sonny's storyline on GH. The actor shared that a director once told him not to mention his disorder, or people would think he would go crazy on set and he might not get hired -- "And that's when I decided to come out," he revealed, "and it was worth it. It really was. To help anybody else who's going through this."
Benard also touched on the serious matter of Alzheimer's disease, an issue that has been explored via the recent storyline with Sonny's father, Mike (Max Gail). The actor became emotional while talking about it, so Wright jumped in with, "Max is incredible, Maurice is incredible, and we're telling everyone's story... This does not discriminate. It's in every household. Someone down the lines knows someone, and it's heartbreaking. So, we're telling everyone's story, and it's a story that touches everyone, and it's hard to get through the scenes."
Benard interjected that since the story started, he hasn't been acting the scenes so much as living them. "That's what makes it harder," he explained. "I don't want to cry in these scenes. I'm trying not to, and that's what makes it worse."
